- This zip contains the thesis in PC-Write Version 3.02 format. These files
- were included for the benefit of those who do not have access to a Hewlett-
- Packard compatible printer.
-
- If necessary, it is possible to read most of the thesis on the screen. The
- best program to do this is PC-Write's ED.EXE. This program is the best choice
- because it is possible to "hide" all the formatting information by pressing
- Alt-Space-Bar. ED.EXE has not been included in this zip for a number of
- reasons, but it is a commonly available shareware program.
-
- An alternative to ED.EXE is LIST.EXE or any other editor or browse program.
- The thesis is primarily ASCII characters, and thus can be read by most
- programs.
-
- There will be two problem areas if the thesis is to be read from the screen.
- First, Chapters 2 and 3 contain Greek characters. These will appear in
- transliterated form on the screen. In addition, many of the Greek characters
- will be surrounded by formatting characters which produce diacritic marks.
- However, as mentioned above, ED.EXE can hide these formatting characters.
- Second, Appendix B has lines that are longer than 80 characters. Therefore,
- Appendix B will be easier to read if you use a wide screen display mode.
-
- Here are the transliterations for the Greek characters:
-
- alpha a
- beta b
- gamma g
- delta d
- epsilon e
- zeta z
- eta h
- theta q
- iota i
- kappa k
- lambda l
- mu m
- nu n
- xi c
- omicron o
- pi p
- rho r
- sigma s
- final sigma j
- tau t
- upsilon u
- phi f
- chi x
- psi y
- omega w
-
- For an explanation of the formatting characters which produce the diacritic
- marks look in the file PR.GRK.
-
-
- Another possible use for the files in this zip is printing on a non-HP
- compatible printer. To do this you will need to be familiar with PC-Write.
- You will need fonts equivalent to the Greek and Letter Gothic fonts included
- in this collection. You will also need to modify the files: PR.LET, PR.GRK,
- and PR.LGF. The last three characters in each of these file names indicate
- which font is being used. GRK is for the Greek font. LGF is for the two
- Letter Gothic fonts, and LET is a generic descriptor for files using the built
- in Courier font.
-
-
- If for some reason you should want to print using a Hewlett-Packard compatible
- printer using these files (It is much easier to use the files in PCL.ZIP),
- several points must be observed. First, do not overwrite any of the PR.xxx or
- ED.xxx files that came in this zip. You should only need to provide the PC-
- Write files ED.EXE and optionally ED.HLP. Don't use the standard PC-WRITE
- files ED.DEF or PR.DEF. If you do, the proper fonts won't be associated with
- the proper chapters. Second, before printing the files with .GRK extensions
- you must execute the batch file DOWNGRK. Likewise, execute the batchfile
- DOWNLGF before printing files ending in .LGF. These two batch files download
- the necessary fonts to the printer.
